Crabtree falls to #10, Niners quickly draft him

Michael Crabtree is now a Niner after they selected him with the 10th pick in the draft

As the Niners waited for their turn to draft and teams made their selections, it came upon the Raiders turn to draft. The Raiders, like the Niners, desperately need a playmaking receiver. So it was pretty much a lock that the Raiders would take the draft’s best playmaking receiver, Michael Crabtree out of Texas Tech right? Wrong. Mastermind (that was sarcastic) Al Davis, who always has a hardon for speedsters, drafted a receiver out of Maryland that I’ve never heard of who is the fastest guy in the draft, but has many question marks surrounding him.
With the 8th and 9th selections belonging to teams that had more pressing needs than wide receiver, Crabtree was available when the Niners selected at 10. It took them about 1 minute to decide that they had gotten lucky and a wide receiver widely expected to be drafted in the top 5 should be drafted.
Now the Niners have the playmaking wide receiver that they have lacked since T.O. was shipped off for nothing about 6 years ago.  I love this pick! This is exactly what the offense needs…. well, besides someone to actually throw it to Crabtree.
The Niners traded their 2nd and 4th round selections this year to Carolina for their 1st round selection next year, which means the Niners will have 2 first rounders next year. Hopefully Carolina is awful this year and that pick is an early first rounder, but I wouldn’t hold my breath as Carolina is expected to go to the playoffs this year. Hopefully Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith get arrested for having child porn on their computers and miss the season.

Smith reworks contract to avoid being cut….my jersey is still good!

Since Alex Smith has come to the niners, it’s been a pretty big disappointment. He was adamant about one thing though, he wanted to stay in with the Niners.

Thanks to this, Smith was able to rework the final 2 years of his contract and stay with the 49ers. According to a source, Smith will make $4 million a season in 2009 and 2010, in addition to base salaries that weren’t immediately made known.

In his previous contract, he was scheduled to make $24.6 million in the final two years.

“We have reached an agreement with Alex and his agent to keep him as a member of the San Francisco 49ers,” general manager Scot McCloughan said in a statement. “Alex expressed a deep interest to remain with the team and that feeling was mutual.” Other teams had shown interest in Smith, who is only 24 years old and has four years of NFL experience. Those teams were willing to pay him more than his 49ers deal, according to a source, but Smith was insistent on making something work in San Francisco.

Smith, the first pick in the 2005 draft out of Utah, had 30 starts in his first three seasons, but was placed on injured reserve for the entire 2008 season because of a shoulder injury.

His best season may have been in 2006, when he completed 257-of-442 passes for 2,890 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Part of his rocky path may be because of the 49ers’ annual change in offensive coordinators — Smith has had a new one in each of his four seasons.

I like this move a lot. I haven’t given up on Smith and think he still deserves to be the #1 quarterback. Also, now my Alex Smith jersey can still be worn for at least one more season! WOO HOO!

Hopefully he is healthy in camp and wins the job. Now we just need someone to block for him and someone to catch his passes… oh, and someone who knows what they are doing to call the plays would be nice.

49ers sign a couple

The 49ers were pretty quick in a few signings today. The niners brought back Moran Norris at FB and resigned Takeo Spikes and Allan Rossum. I like all 3 signings. I liked Norris when he was with the niners, he is a beast of a blocker. Spikes is great too, had a good year last year and despite being 50 years old can still play. Same goes for Rossum, who was a great little kick returned last year. So far a good start.

Niners franchise…….. No one?

With free agency set to begin in the NFL this week, most teams were busying deciding which one of their key players to franchise and which ones to sign to long term deals.

Thank God the Niners don’t have to worry about things like that. They don’t have anyone worth franchising. Well, they have 2 great players, Gore and Willis, but they are both locked up so there is no need to franchise either of them.  Since the other 50 players all suck, nobody was franchised.

The 49ers had no free agents worthy of the franchise tag.

The good news is that the Niners are projected to be $25 million under the cap and will be active in free agency. They also have the number 10 pick in the draft, which should get them a good player as well. Look for them to make a free agent signing fairly quickly after the free agency period begins this Friday.

At least were not as fucked at the Raiders.
