A’s trade team for Matt Holliday
November 10, 2008 by Slicker
The trade has been finalized… the A’s have traded Huston Street, Greg Smith and Carlos Gonzales for Matt Holliday. On one side of the trade, you think, Wow, this could be great, now we have someone that can hit the ball for the A’s. Then you realize… he has only 1 year left on his contract and is going to get paid serious cash flow next year… This is the part where you start scratching your head… I mean, whats the purpose of trading your best prospect plus 2 proven players for a guy that you might lose or trade for more prospects.
This trading for prospects is starting to get fucking ridiculous. How about, sign Holliday for a long-term deal and try and build around him? How about trying to establish ourselves as a contender at some point? So, the A’s gave up 2 guys that are pretty much already replaced (Street and Smith), but losing Carlos is the big gamble, the kid looks like he is going to be the real deal and it will be sad to see him blossum while we rent Holliday for 1 year.
Oh well, Beane usually has a plan, hopefully whatever his plan is works.
